the founders

Frustrated by the inaccessibility of traditional publishing and unsatisfied with preexisting outlets, we started ær'd with a commitment to young voices. Down with bought media, up with the teenage zine!

frequently asked questions

what does ær'd mean?

Our name is a play on the phrases "on air" and "air your grievances". We want to platform the voices of young writers like radio stations platform talk show hosts, we want to put you on air. We felt that young people lacked a legitimate space to share their opinion and personal writing, or "air their grievances", and ær'd seeks to fulfill that need in a manner accessible to writers and consumers alike. Why the spelling? We are in part named after Aer Lingus, the national airline of Ireland, a founding editor's favorite airline. We did this because we are an indie publication and can do silly things like name ourselves after an airline if we please.

who can write for ær'd?

We are open to all high school and college students!

can i really write about whatever i want?

Yes! As long as your writing adheres to our writing guidelines, the floor is yours to speak on whatever you please.

i submitted my work through the submission form, now what?

Once we receive your piece, an editor creates a copy where they reformat the writing and leave minor suggestions (formatting, grammar, and occasional small rewrites for clarity). You will receive the copy where you can then view the suggestions and make any edits until the day before publication. Work is copied directly from the document onto the website, so whatever is left on the day before publication will be published as is.

If you would like more in-depth feedback (beyond formatting, grammar, and occasional small rewrites for clarity), please submit as early as possible and reach out to an editor directly.

If for whatever reason your work cannot be published, you will receive an email from an editor with the reason for not publishing.

am i able to receive help with my writing?

Absolutely. If you need help coming up with an idea, you can refer to past issues and our ideas for the taking section for inspiration. If you would like to talk through an idea or receive more hands-on support in the creation of your piece, please reach out to an editor directly, we are always excited to help!
